TrainCrasher Review
TrainCrasher is a free-to-play, side-scroller beat ‘em up action RPG developed and published by Softmax, the Korean game company behind the hit game series, Magna Carta and The War of Genesis. TrainCrasher is a new mobile RPG that resembles a mixture between the classic beat ‘em up game, Final Fight, and the more modern PC MMORPG, Dungeon Fighter. The game completely takes place on a moving train with hundreds of stages to fight through and features a unique steampunk world with beautifully drawn anime-inspired graphics. While its progression system, PVP, and RPG elements are fairly standard compared to other mobile RPGs, the arcade-like, combo-oriented combat system is TrainCrasher’s most impressive and distinctive feature that offers a breath of fresh air in the action RPG genre.

Character Creation and Classes
When players begin, they can choose one of four character classes which include: Ron (Sword), Mei (Axe), Zett (Brawler), and Hound (Gun), with many more classes coming soon. Players can create their first two classes for free but will have to spend a good amount of Diamonds (premium currency) to create additional characters. Ron is an all-around swordsman that is well-balanced in attack and defense with a high critical chance rate, Mei is a mid-ranged combatant armed with a large axe with medium attack speed and powerful combos, Zett is an unarmed brawler specialized in blows and grabs with high defense, and Hound is a ranged gunman with low attack and defense but specialized in long-ranged attacks and hit-and-run tactics. After completing the Story campaign on Normal difficulty with Hound, players can unlock a secret character named Alice who generally plays the same as Hound but with a different appearance. Each class generally has the same button combinations for attacks but the moves differ for each class which makes them fairly different to play. The different classes all have various playstyles, combos, and gameplay which add a lot more variety and strategy to the game.

Crashing the Train
TrainCrasher takes place completely on a train, which is divided into many stages or parts of the train. The story, which isn’t a large aspect of the game, basically involves the player seeking revenge on a villain named Meleck who happens to be at the end of the train, and the player will have to go through over 100 train cars full of bodyguards to get to him. Although the entire game takes place on a train, there are many different maps, moving environments, and a steam-punk theme that makes the game look quite varied and charming. Each map contains 5 stages and there is a powerful boss battle in the 5th stage of each map, although every stage also has a mini-boss battle at the end of it. Every stage consists of moving along the train, which is littered with explosive barrels, boxes, and other obstacles that can be destroyed, and defeating waves of enemies and a boss. Completing stages gives gold, experience, and equipment, and each stage is fairly short which makes it a great game to pick up and play at any time. There are also different difficulties that can be unlocked after completing the Story mode on a previous difficulty. However, even in Normal difficulty, the stages become progressively more difficult and will require players to upgrade their equipment via enhancement and/or farming previous stages to become more powerful.

Beating People Up in Style
TrainCrasher features a side-scrolling, beat ‘em up style combat system that easy to use yet fast-paced and full of interesting combats. If you combined the classic arcade/SNES game, Final Fight, with the PC MMORPG, Dungeon Fighter, and put it on mobile, you would get something like TrainCrasher. Players can move their characters with a virtual joystick and attack with three buttons: A, +, and S. While the 3 button layout appears very simplistic, there are actually a bunch of different moves that can be executed with the A and S buttons that can create special combos and unique attacks. For example, some button combinations might look like this: AAAS, AAAASS, AAAAASSS, etc. The + button grabs enemies (the + really means A+S but allows players to simply press one button for both) and then players can either press A to punish a grabbed enemy or press S to throw enemies into the side of the train or completely off the train (if the side is exposed). There are also various combinations that include running, grabbing, and more for a bunch of unique moves with only three (mainly 2) different buttons. The combat is incredibly fun, fast-paced, and flashy, and each class varies in playstyle and combo moves.

While there are no skills to activate like in other RPGs, characters do have an AP (ability power) bar to watch out for. Skills are replaced by special combos, which are any moves other than pure A spamming, and these combos use up AP to perform. Once a character runs out of AP, they can no longer perform certain combos and must refill their AP by either using basic A moves or switching to a secondary character via the Chain system. When players attack enemies, their Chain bar fills and when it is full, players can switch to a secondary character (that they can choose before the stage) that takes the place of the original character. This character generally won’t be as strong since they won’t have the original character’s equipment, but using them will allow the original character’s AP and HP to refill. However, the secondary character cannot be switched out until they refill the Chain bar again and if they die, the stage is over. Therefore, it is important to use the Chain system strategically when the original character is running low on AP and/or HP in order to maximize the chance of defeating stages.

PVP and Additional Modes
Like most mobile RPGs, TrainCrasher features asynchronous PVP which is the game’s only online feature. In the Arena, players are given a choice of three players to fight against asynchronously, which means the opponent is controlled by the computer AI. Before a PVP fight, players can assemble their party of a main character and a secondary character that they can switch between in battle. When players attack others, they play as their main character, with full control of the combat, and can switch characters when the Chain bar is full (which will almost never happen since the PVP matches are very short). However, the system works differently for the asynchronous opponents. Instead of being able to switch characters, the opponents simply have both of their characters out at once, which actually gives them a slight advantage. Alternatively, if someone attacks the player, they will have to go up against the player’s two characters at the same time. It is an odd system but the PVP works as one would expect and there is a ranking system that gives rewards based on the players rank at the end of the season. The PVP is somewhat fun but getting stun-locked and quickly killed by two of the opponent’s character at the same time can be quite irritating.

In addition the PVP and Story Mode, there are two other PVE modes that players can participate in. These modes include: Gold Rush and Ghost Train. The Gold Rush mode resembles an endless runner game in which the player’s character is constantly running forward (can’t be stopped) and players have to destroy boxes/barrels and defeat enemies in order to obtain the most amount of gold before they die. Players will die after they get hit a certain amount of times, which is made harder by the unstoppable running, and defeating things will give out gold. Ghost Train, on the other hand, plays more like a survival mode. Players control their characters like in the Story Mode, and fight through train cars of never-ending enemies. The goal is to get as far as possible without dying. Both modes give gold as a reward, which is used for enhancing equipment, and increases the player’s ranking in those modes which give rewards at the end of the season.

Cash Shop/In-App Purchases (IAP)
TrainCrasher’s in-app purchases mainly revolve around equipment summoning and convenience-related items. With Diamonds (premium currency), players can summon random weapons and purchase in-game gold, Coins (energy), and temporary experience boosts. Players can summon random 1-3 star equipment with friendship points and in-game gold, random 4-6 star equipment for any class with Diamonds, and random 4-6 star equipment for a specific class with a little more Diamonds. Equipment summons, energy for stages, and the experience boosts are the main advantages of spending money and will allow players to play longer, defeat stages more quickly, and level faster. Spending money isn’t required for progression, but players will have to grind and farm previous stages in order to enhance their equipment until they are powerful enough to progress, and spending money helps reduce that process. Spending money can, however, make the PVP slightly pay-to-win since certain players will be higher level and have better equipment. Overall, spending money is not required but provides advantages in faster stage/Story progression and a slight edge in the asynchronous PVP.

Final Verdict – Great
TrainCrasher is a great mobile beat ‘em up RPG that brings something new to the table via its unique action-packed combat system. With charming steampunk and anime-inspired graphics, a unique combat system full of interesting combos, and many classes to choose from, TrainCrasher is a fun RPG to pick up and play at any time that all action RPG fans should try out.

BLEACH Brave Souls Review
BLEACH Brave Souls is a free-to-play, 3D action RPG developed and published by KLab Global, a Japanese game developer behind the popular mobile titles, LoveLive! School idol festival and Lord of Dragons. The game was first released in July 2015 in Japan where it acquired over 7 million downloads before it finally launched worldwide on January 15, 2016. Unlike a lot of the rip-off anime browser games, BLEACH Brave Souls is an officially licensed game based on the original Bleach anime/manga series. The game is very story-oriented, and despite condensing and streamlining the story onto a mobile game, it manages to tell a complete and engaging story full of humorous dialogue, emotional events, and colorful characters. Apart from the intriguing story, the rest of the game is fairly generic and greatly resembles other mobile action RPGs in terms of the action combat, stage-based progression, and characters/heroes to collect, except everything feels a little more polished, and the game also has real-time co-op and a PVP system that makes it worth trying out.

Reliving the Anime One Stage at a Time
The world of BLEACH Brave Souls is divided into hundreds of stages, each of which feature a lot of character dialogue and recreated scenes and events from the Bleach animated series. Like most mobile action RPGs, the stages are quite short and designed for casual gamers but get longer and more difficult later on. Each stage involves running through a fairly short and linear map consisting of a couple waves of enemies with a boss battle at the end. Before stages, players can choose a random other player’s character (AI-controlled) to tag along for the boss battle and as expected, they will appear during the boss battle to help out. Players can also have 3 characters in their party that they can switch between at any time during battle. This is a useful feature that allows players to level three characters at the same time as well as adds a strategic aspect to the game via switching out characters low on health or switching to a character with a more favorable element compared to enemies. Completing stages gives gold, experience, Crystals (for Soul Tree upgrades), possibly accessories and characters, and progresses the game’s storyline. Although everything feels polished, the short stages and stage-based progression system will feel very generic to those familiar with mobile action RPG titles.

The Story of Ichigo, the Soul Reaper
BLEACH Brave Souls is a very story-driven game that stays true to the original story in the Bleach anime and manga series. Players play as Ichigo, a noble high school student who becomes a Soul Reaper in order to defend his loved ones from invading Hollows, monsters containing the soul of deceased people who fail to pass onto the other side, known as the Soul Society. The story features all the important events from the anime with a lot of filler content cut out in order to condense it into a mobile game. Considering the anime contains over 300 episodes with thousands of hours of content, the game goes through the story fairly quickly, picking out note-worthy events and dialogues, but in a way that keeps the story well-paced without any confusion for players that have never seen the anime. The story itself, is quite engaging, and ranges from humorous to emotional, with lots of memorable characters and character development. The developers did a very good job retelling the story, and even players who have watched Bleach in the past will likely enjoy reliving the tale once again.

Defeating Hollows with Action Combat
The combat in BLEACH Brave Souls is very similar to other mobile action RPGs such as MARVEL Future Fight. Players can assemble a party of 3 characters and can switch between them at any time in battle but can only control one at a time. The game uses the typical controller-style, virtual joystick/button layout with an additional feature of swiping the screen to dodge. The combat is very smooth and fast-paced with fluid animations, but although the controls are responsive, the swiping to dodge feature is a bit odd. Generally, controller-style mobile action RPGs would have a button to dodge due to the specific hand placement so having to swipe the screen to dodge feels very inconvenient. Other than that, the combat feels very action-oriented and more polished than a lot of other mobile action RPGs. In addition to regular attacking, characters also have a special skill that can only be used once per battle, as well as two other skills with cooldowns. Being able to switch between characters adds a strategic component to the game as enemies become harder and overall, the combat is fairly simple but polished. Like most mobile RPGs, there is also an Auto option which allows characters to automatically move and attack on their own for some good ol’ AFK farming.

Collectable Bleach Characters
There are many Bleach characters to collect and add into the player’s party, even characters that normally would not work together in the anime series. Each character has different elements, skills, stats, and playstyle. There are five elements in the game so it is important to level up characters of various elements to switch between for the most advantage over different kinds of enemies. The characters also have different skills, including unique special skills, soul traits that give a passive bonus, and stats that vary in ATK, DEF, FCS, SP, and STA. Some characters are melee or ranged, and have different attack speeds and attack ranges which affects their playstyle. Characters can be leveled up through completing Story Mode missions, by sacrificing other characters via the Augment system, and from their Soul Tree. Each character has a unique Soul Tree containing many branches in which players can increase their character’s stats with Crystals obtained from completing stages which offers some stat customization. Unfortunately, characters cannot be evolved in this game (i.e. going from 4 to 5 stars) so the only way to obtain rare (4/5 star) characters is through Gacha summons, making it purely based on luck. However, players do get a lot of summons for free (will be explained in In-App Purchases) and the large amount of collectable characters adds variety to the game. Characters can also equip accessories as well as Soul Link with other characters for additional bonuses.

Taking Down Hollows As a Team (Co-Op)
A fun online feature of BLEACH Brave Souls is its 4-player real-time co-op. There are special co-op missions (separate from the Story mode) that players can participate in a couple of times each day that contain event missions as well as missions recommended for certain levels. Upon creating or joining a room, players can match up with up to 3 other random players and play together in real-time. The missions generally play the same as in the Story mode except with new environments, more enemies, and more powerful bosses. Players can only control one character during co-op and cannot switch between their characters like in the Story mode, but teaming up with 3 other players makes up for this. The co-op mode is quite fun because of the real-time partying and social interaction but unfortunately, there aren’t that many co-op missions and the main Story itself does not contain a co-op feature. Overall, the co-op is a fun addition to the game but due to a lack of co-op stages, it eventually becomes a mode to simply farm Crystals in.

An All-Out Automated PVP Brawl
In addition to the Co-op mode, the game has PVP where players can take on random player’s parties for special rewards. However, unlike the Co-op mode, the PVP is completely automated. In the VS Battle mode (PVP), players can choose an opponent from a list of other players and then watch as the two parties go head-to-head in a chaotic 3 vs 3 battle. During the PVP, both sides have their 3-man party out at once as they charge toward one another with skills, effects, and bodies flying everywhere. Despite the automated-ness of the battles, they can still be quite entertaining to watch due to frantic “every man for himself” style battles, which sort of explains why the developers went for the automated PVP approach. It would just be way too chaotic and difficult to manually control a character amidst all of crazy action going on especially when the computer AI all have perfect skill aim, player targeting, and whatnot. Players receive prizes for their rankings each week and the PVP, despite being automated, still makes for an interesting addition to the game.

Cash Shop/In-App Purchases (IAP)
The in-app purchases are very similar to those of other hero-collecting RPGs. With Spirit Orbs (premium currency), players can summon random Heroes and accessories between 3-5 stars (Guaranteed 4 star if they summon 10 at a time), and purchase in-game gold and energy. The in-app purchases are fairly simple- there isn’t really much else other than that. There are tickets players can obtain to summon Heroes from login awards and events for free but the game also gives out a lot of Spirit Orbs for free. Players can get quite a lot of Spirit Orbs simply from completing Story missions, as well as from login rewards, events, achievements, and PVP rewards. The game is actually extremely generous in giving out free Spirit Orbs so players can summon a lot of Heroes and accessories regularly without spending any money. Although stages get more difficult in the future, money is not necessarily needed to progress, however, spending money offers advantages such as more energy and in-game gold, as well as having a greater chance of obtaining a 5 star Hero/accessory due to more summons, which gives an edge in the Story missions and PVP.

Final Verdict – Good
Despite its generic mobile action RPG appearance, BLEACH Brave Souls is a very polished game that improves upon an old formula with many interesting features. With a top notch story based on the original anime, smooth action combat, real-time co-op, and many Bleach characters to collect, BLEACH Brave Souls is a game that all anime and action RPG fans should try out.

Knights & Dragons Review
Knights & Dragons is a free-to-play, online social RPG developed by IUGO, the developers behind Walking Dead: Road to Survival- a special Telltale crossover game- and published by GREE, a large Japan-based company behind the strategy games, War of Nations and Crime City. Knights & Dragons was one of GREE’s first mobile games and was in the Top 10-50 grossing charts (on the Apple App Store and Google Play) in many countries for several years with currently over 10 million downloads worldwide. While the game looks quite outdated by today’s standards, it still has many redeemable features that make it a noteworthy game even in 2015. Knights & Dragons features an in-depth elemental advantage system mixed into its automated turn-based combat, lots of pets and equipment to collect/craft, a kingdom to build, and guild battles that makes it an addictive game suitable for people of all ages, although it is generally aimed towards a younger audience.

Create Your Very Own Kingdom
In Knights & Dragons, Players take on the role of a Commander Knight and have their very own city to build. There is a wide selection of structures to build including Armorsmiths, guard towers, taverns, cathedrals, and more that players can place anywhere in their kingdom. While Armorsmiths have a purpose such as for crafting equipment, all the other buildings (with the exception of the starter ones) don’t have any specific purpose other than to generate gold. Each of these buildings generate a certain number of gold per hour (which have to be manually collected) and have a storage limit. They can be upgraded but have no purpose other than to generate gold so the Kingdom-building aspect is fairly simple. Considering players cannot attack other cities in this game (this isn’t one of those city building strategy games), defenses and other structures aren’t really required so the simplicity makes sense.

Questing and Exploration
There are a multitude of quests to be found in the world of Knights & Dragons. Upon starting the game, players are introduced to many charismatic characters including Gwen, the intelligent Court Wizard, Morgan, the sassy Armorsmith, and Artie, the humorous Squire. These colorful characters provide players with hundreds of quests throughout the game, starting with a few that eventually lead to more and more. Completing a quest automatically unlocks a new quest, most of which are a continuation of the previous one story-wise. Each quest involves some character dialogue which provides a backstory behind the quests and requires players to complete an objective such as crafting a set of armor or defeating enemies in a certain area. Completing quests provide gold, experience, and material for crafting elemental equipment. Crafting plays a large role in the game and players can craft armor simply by providing material (from completing stages) and waiting for armor to complete which can take from minutes to hours. More difficult bosses provide better material to create even more powerful equipment.

There is a large world in the player’s fingertips. Players start off in their kingdom and gradually discover more and more enemy bases and lairs surrounding their city. Each enemy hideout unlocks one at a time. In order to unlock a new hideout, which is covered by a fog of war, players must beat the previous hideout on Epic difficulty. Each dungeon has 5 difficulties that are unlocked upon defeating the previous one: Normal, Mighty, Valor, Honor, and Epic. After an area is defeated on Epic, a new area will appear featuring new monsters, bosses, and maps. Defeating the different difficulties is usually tied to quests which give additional rewards and each dungeon gets increasingly difficult. Each of these hideouts also has an elemental theme which determines the elemental material the boss drops and these materials can be farmed by repeating the stage.

Choosing the Right Element
Knights & Dragons has a simple, yet strategic, element system tied to its combat system. There are 6 elements in the game which include: Fire, Water, Spirit, Earth, Air, and Starmetal (rare). Players can have up to 6 Knights in their kingdom and each Knight is of a certain element except for the first Knight who can be any element. All equipment (Armors, rings, and amulets) also have an element and Knights can only wear equipment that matches their element. However, some armors possess two elements which allow more than one type of Knight to equip it and actually give them an additional element. When a Knight wears an armor of two elements, it allows them to equip rings and amulets of the other element as well and gives them two element types in combat.

Certain elements have an advantage over other elements. Fire beats Spirit, Spirit beats Earth, Earth beats Air, Air beats Water, and Water beats Fire (Fire>Spirit>Earth>Air>Water>Fire). Starmetal is a rare element that is powerful against every element including itself. When Knights are of a stronger element (based on their armor), they deal 50% more damage to enemies, and if they are of a weaker element, they take 50% more damage from the enemies. Things get more complicated when Knights and monsters both have two elements, but generally, the formula remains the same. If one element is more powerful than the other, there is a 50% increase in damage. If both elements are more powerful than the other two, there is a 100% increase in damage. It is also possible for the advantages to cancel out if both sides have one stronger element, and non-adjacent elements have no effect; For example, the elements Spirit and Water have no effect on each other. Overall, the element system is simple to understand but fairly in-depth and adds a strategic aspect to the combat.

Fighting Your Foes
Knights & Dragons features a simple automated, turn-based combat system that is relatively outdated by today’s standards but was probably more engaging during its time (2012). Players can have a party of up to 3 Knights at once, and each stage involves fighting through 3-4 waves of enemies. Rather than each Knight taking a turn to attack, only the Knight in front will attack enemies until he or she dies before the next Knight comes in. The frontline Knight trades blows with enemies in an automated turn-based fashion and each wave consists of multiple enemies to defeat. There is also usually a boss battle at the end of each stage. The element system plays a large role in the battles as explained before, and players must assemble their Knights in proper armor before entering each battle. Players can also collect elemental pets via the Hunt mode that assist players in battle. Pets deal small amounts of damage but have activatable abilities to increase experience or gold from defeated monsters. Knights also have one skill that players can activate every now and then that deals a lot of damage. Unlike a lot of other games, the health of Knights does not automatically refill at the end of each battle. Players will have to use health potions which cost premium currency or wait for their Knights to recover, which replaces the typical energy system.

The Arena and Guilds
The more sociable and multiplayer-oriented aspects of the game comes from the PVP Arena and Guild system. Players can battle against other players in the Arena which involves battles similar to the single-player modes. Both sides can assemble a team of three Knights and battle it out in asynchronous, automated turn-based combat. Players can earn glory from winning battles and there are special rewards for maintaining a consecutive winning spree. There are also guilds in Knights & Dragons which provides players with other people to talk with and there are guild wars to increase a guild’s ranking. Guild battles last for an hour and guild members can attack members of the other guild or the other guild’s castle during this time to earn points. Everything is asynchronous and the guild with the most points at the end of the hour wins. The guild battles are exciting and add a sociable aspect to the game. There are also boss raids that appear from time to time that players can participate in to take down powerful bosses that require a special Boss Raid energy but give great rewards.

Cash Shop/In-App Purchases (IAP)
Knights & Dragons has fairly standard in-app purchases to summon random equipment as well as other advantages. With Gems players can summon equipment such as armor, rings, and amulets from a variety of chests that give out different equipment. The star rankings vary for different chests and some can give out crafting material or other items instead of equipment. There is a large gambling aspect to it but players have a chance of obtaining some really rare and powerful equipment if they are lucky. With Gems, players can also refill their Knight’s health, which is like energy, as well as refill energy for Boss Raids. Gems can also be used to revive fallen Knights in battles and purchase in-game gold. On occasion, players can obtain free keys to open a chest containing only 1 star equipment, which of course, is not nearly as good as Gem chests. Overall, spending Gems is not entirely necessary to progress in the game but gives large advantages in better equipment for stage progression, PVP, and guild battles.

Final Verdict – Good
Knights & Dragons was one of the first popular RPGs on mobile devices and continues to strive even in 2015. Although the game has some pay-to-win aspects and lackluster automated combat and graphics, it has a reasonably in-depth elemental advantage system, lots of equipment to craft and pets to collect, and a sociable guild system that makes it an overall addictive game geared towards a more casual and younger audience.
