Game of War Review
Game of War: Fire Age is a free-to-play, 2D Strategy MMO (MMORTS) developed and published by Machine Zone - a California-based developer.  The game was officially launched on July 25th, 2013 on iOS, and was ported to Android in early 2015. It is notable for its high-profile advertising campaign featuring model and celebrity Kate Upton as the face of the game’s tutorial character, which has aired frequently on television alongside Clash of Clans commercials.  Kate Upton has since been replaced by Mariah Carey, but Upton has been the face of the game for some time. Those familiar with other empire-building games ( such as Empire: Four Kingdoms and Wartune), should find Game of War easy to pick up and learn.

Game of War Logo

Beginnings of Your Empire
Game of War begins with the Goddess Athena (played by Upton), who instructs the player on the many city-centric aspects of the game: how to create new structures, how to upgrade structures, and how to make use of them.  You are also given the choice of a Hero. The game's tutorial uses large visual cues to move the player through the process, blacking out all non-relevant information.  It's a relatively short tutorial, ending after just a few building modifications.  Athena suggests that players follow the recommended quests, notes the 24-hour shield protecting the player’s castle from outside attacks, and stresses the importance of joining an Alliance to be able to defend later.

Reinforcing Your Army
Recommended quests progress in a similar fashion to the tutorial: build a barracks, upgrade a mine, build a total of four farms, upgrade a watchtower, etc.  Each of these comes with resource rewards and experience for the player’s Hero.  If players decide not to follow the recommended quests, there are a large amount of secondary quests found underneath the recommended quest tab that correspond to nearly any action available in the game.  As is common in freemium strategy games, taking any action in the game sets off a time limit that can be reduced by using items, which are either bought from the premium shop or received as a reward.  A special feature of the game that helps with timers is the Alliance Help mechanic, which becomes available once players join an Alliance.  They can click on their timer and ask their Alliance for help, which allows other members to send aid and reduce the duration on the player’s timer.

Heroes are another aspect of a player’s empire and strength; they gain experience individually and level-up to add to the power of a player’s army.  They also allow players to perform specific tasks, such as fight monsters found out in the fields, boost troop stats, or equip armor forged using the game’s crafting system.  Fully-utilizing the crafting system in conjunction with a hero maximizes potential stat benefits.  The downside to heroes is this: as unique characters in the player’s army, they can be captured and thrown into enemy prisons, and held for an amount of time based on hero level.  During this time, opponents can decide whether or not to execute them.  If you happen to capture an enemy hero, remember that executing heroes offers benefits such as hindering the growth of your opponents, the completion of quest objectives related to execution, and possibly a limited boost to one of the your buildings.

Game of War Enemiesd

Research and Skill Trees
One of the game’s most customizable, RPG-inspired features are its multiple skill trees related to the Academy building and the Hero.  Selecting the Academy opens a large menu full of different aspects of the game to explore, such as Economics, Combat, Wall Traps, Heroes, and Crafting; some of these only unlock at higher Stronghold and Academy levels.  Players can pick and choose this research to customize their strengths in the game, in a way similar to the Hero’s skill trees.  While the Hero focuses more on combat and monster-slaying, its skill tree is relatively the similar to the research tree; however, instead of requiring timers to acquire new abilities, Heroes gain talent points with every level.  This allows players to strengthen their hero in the areas they wish instantly.

Game of War Combat

Alliances, Your New Family
One of the Game of War’s best defenses against enemy attacks is to join an Alliance; Alliances serve a similar function to 'guilds' in other MMO games. Thanks to the in-game translator, Alliances can communicate with each other seamlessly.  Communication is the key to success in Game of War, as the game’s social aspects drip down to many of its combat mechanics; for example, the ruling Alliance may declare that all-out war, and stipulate that attacks may only be made on a certain day of the week.  Offenders who intentionally or unintentionally go against this ruling may be invaded relentlessly by the Alliance and their allies as punishment for disobeying.
Alliances are also a great source of help, and reward to players who continue to participate and help others with their empires.  The Alliance menu consists of multiple sections, a few of which are of particular interest.  The Alliance Store is a leader-operated store, which means that leaders stock the store as its members flag items in the catalog.  Its items, varying from basic boosts to player renames, are purchased with Loyalty: a currency acquired from doing Alliance Quests.  Alliances also offer many other benefits, such as sending reinforcements in to protect against attacks, helping reduce the length left on building and research timers, and a private chat system that allows new players to ask questions and get answers.

Game of War Gameplay 2015

World PvP
A player’s first introduction to the game’s PvP aspects will likely be the day that their peace shield runs out, and they are attacked by nearby empires.  The game’s tutorials only extend to building and upgrading, meaning that beginners are left high and dry the moment their shields run off, further proving the importance of joining an Alliance.  Alliance players can send help and give tips to new players, as the game leaves many mechanics unexplained.  One such mechanic is Power, a number that all players can see that determines how strong the player’s empire is, and can be a deciding factor in an opponent’s decision to attack or relent.  Players can boost their Power by training troops and expanding their armies, making sure they produce enough resources, and ensuring they have enough hospitals to heal their armies as they defend the city.  As is common in this genre, troops can be sent out into the world on a timer to scout, attack, and acquire resources from enemies to further support their own growth efforts.

Game of War Lion

Cash Shop
The game’s cash shop is tied into its Inventory, where players can purchase VIP subscriptions that boost build speeds and reward gain, offer instant experience for Heroes, further peace shields, and materials for crafting.  The game rewards Gold (the game’s premium currency) while questing, but it does not reward a significant enough amount to balance out the inevitably extreme spending of other players.  While it is possible to get ahead in this game without spending a dime, it requires a very determined and patient player to rise to the ranks of players who don’t mind spending money.  It is also worth noting that this game is notorious for its overly flashy and repetitive attempts to get players to spend money; you'll find an advertisement for cash shop promotions and bonuses on nearly every game screen.

Game of War Loyalty

Final Verdict - Good
Game of War has a poor reputation for its pay-to-win elements, and the fact that its user-interface constantly attempts to find new ways to get you to pay does not help it. The absurd Kate Upton commercials are only icing on the cake. The game itself is not well-explained for beginners and players new to the genre, instructing you to endlessly build and upgrade structures without explaining the meaning of your actions or telling you what the game goal even is.  With its lack of in-depth tutorials and online resources explaining its features, for new players the game is more of a clicking-and-waiting game than a strategy game.
Despite all of this, Game of War is one of the highest grossing games on the App Store (just under Clash of Clans) for a reason, as it boasts a massive global player base; it is packed with many features, from its significant and unique social system, to its robust skill trees and crafting systems.  It can offer strategic play for patient, determined players willing to spend the time (or money) to dig into and understand its breadth of content, making it a solid game for players who can get over its learning curve.  That said, it has a specific audience, and its pay-to-win elements are a deterrent to many.

Step into the Arena
Clash Royale is a purely online PVP game that is incredibly easy to pick up and play. The game features 8 Arenas, which are similar to ranks or leagues in other games, and each Arena has specific cards that can be unlocked from Arena chests. Players can obtain chests from winning, as well as trophies (rank points), and can advance to the next Arena (which features new cards to unlock) after they reach the trophy requirements (i.e. Arena I: 0+ trophies, Arena II: 400+ trophies, etc.). Losing a match will decrease the player’s trophy count, and players can actually fall back into a previous Arena if they lose enough trophies. Luckily, the game has an automated match-making system that matches players of similar rankings to keep each match balanced, and the system works very well. Players can simply press the “Battle” button on the main screen to begin a match, and due to the high popularity of the game, players will almost instantly connect with another player within seconds. Each match is also very short making Clash Royale incredibly addictive, such that players can quickly queue game after game and won’t want to stop playing.

Dominating the Battlefield
Clash Royale at its core is a mix of CCG, MOBA, and Castle Defense. Players can have up to 8 cards in their deck and up to 4 cards in their hand at once. On the battlefield, there are two lanes with two Arena Towers and a King’s Tower on each side, both of which will automatically attack nearby enemies. The goal of each match is to either have more Crowns (gained from destroying a tower) than your opponent at the end of the time limit, or to destroy the opponent’s King’s Tower which automatically gives 3 Crowns total. Each player has an Elixir bar that constantly refills, and each card requires a certain amount of Elixir to summon. Players can summon cards onto the battlefield by dragging the cards onto the field, and then watch as the events unfold. Troop cards automatically move and attack on their own, spell cards attack/affect the area selected, and building cards are placed at the specified locations. After summoning a card, another one will automatically be added into the hand. The gameplay is quite frantic and fast-paced as both sides continuously summon cards in order to wreck the opponent’s base or to defend their own base. Each match has a 3 minute limit but if it is tied (both sides have the same number of Crowns) after 3 minutes, then there is a 1 minute Sudden Death where the first to obtain another Crown wins. The gameplay is very simple and easy to learn, yet surprisingly in-depth.

clash royale gameplay18

Despite the deceivingly simple appearance, Clash Royale is actually a very strategic game. Firstly, with the huge selection of cards to unlock, players have the freedom to assemble different combinations of cards to excel in various circumstances. Next, there are various tactics to employ on the battlefield. Should players ignore the enemy to push a lane? Should they take out both towers or go straight for the King’s Tower in one lane? A lot of the strategy comes down to choosing the right time to attack and defend, and which lane to focus on. In addition, players need to decide which card to play and how they can make the most use of their Elixir. Most of the time, players will try to group at least 3 troops together to push a lane although this can leave the players open for an attack in the other lane. Most cards can also have multiple purposes such as either using a Giant to attack the enemy towers or to use it to tank and distract the enemy invaders. A strong defense is sometimes the best offense, and certain cards may have to be sacrificed in the process. Players have to think fast because each match goes by very quickly, and although many games end up being very similar, there is definitely a lot of strategy involved each time.

Building Your Army
There are many cards to collect in Clash Royale which feature notable characters from the popular city-building strategy game, Clash of Clans. Clash Royale has three different card types: Troops, Spells, and Buildings. Troops include a wide range of characters which different attack power, health points, specialties, and more. Some notable troop cards include Giants, who are large beasts with a high amount of health points and attack power but can only attack towers, Witches, who are powerful spell casters that can summon skeletons, and Goblins, who are generally weak but high in numbers. Spells are long-ranged artillery that can be dragged onto anywhere on the battlefield to deal AOE damage or other special abilities. Spells include Fireball, Arrows, and Rocket that deal heavy damage on their target, Goblin Barrel, which spawns goblins at the landed location, Rage, which increases troop movement speed and attack power, and much more. The wide assortment of cards that can be unlocked and collected from the various Arenas adds a lot of strategy and variety to the gameplay.

clash royale arena1

The Controversial Chest System
Chests are an important aspect of the game and also a controversial one. Winning a match will award players will a chest, which includes Silver, Gold, Giant, Magical, and Super Magical chests. Each chest contains random cards which include troops, spells, and buildings from the specific Arena. When players obtain a card for the first time, they unlock that card to use in their deck. When players obtain a card they already have, it gives the duplicate card experience to level it up. In Clash Royale, cards are leveled up and upgraded purely by obtaining duplicates from chests. However, there is something controversial about chests. Chests take a long time to open; Silver chests take 3 hours to open, Gold chests take 8 hours to open, etc., and only one chest can be opened at a time. Players also only have four chest slots, meaning they can only hold up to 4 at once, and every single victory gives a chest. Therefore, although players can continue to play after they acquired 4 chests, they won’t be able to obtain any more until they open a chest, which as mentioned, takes hours to open.

clash royale chest

At first glance, the chests appear to be some sort of “Stamina” system, but it really isn’t. The game actually has no Stamina so players can continue to play as much as they want even if their chest slots are full; they just can’t acquire any more chests. The bigger problem is that chests can be opened instantly with Gems (premium currency). Therefore, players who are willing to spend money will be able to open more chests, obtain more cards, and level up their cards faster than free players (since card leveling is purely based on opening chests). This is why the chest system seems to annoy most players of the game. Players can continue to play all they want with no limiting Stamina system but they cannot open chests, obtain more chests, or level up their cards unless they spend money or wait for the chests to open.

clash royale iap

Cash Shop/In-App Purchases (IAP)
In addition to using Gems to open chests, there are a variety of other things that can be purchased in the Shop. Players can purchase Giant, Magical, and Super Magical chests which includes cards from their current Arena, and these chests contain huge amounts of cards that open instantly. Hence, spending money gives an undeniable advantage in quick card leveling, which can potentially be 100x faster than a free-to-play player. With Gems, players can also purchase Gold, which is used to upgrade cards once they have enough experience. Gold can also be a limiting feature for free-to-play members who don’t have enough gold to upgrade their cards, so purchasing gold provides further advantages. Overall, the game can feel very pay-to-win due to how much more quickly paying players can upgrade their cards. However, because free players can eventually upgrade their cards with time, and can unlock all the same cards as paying players, the game is not completely pay-to-win. Still, players seeking to become competitive with dreams of reaching the top 100 of the leaderboards will likely have to spend some money.

clash royale gameplay42

Final Verdict – Great
Clash Royale is yet another smash hit by Supercell that features fast-paced and strategic PVP battles, lots of cards to collect and upgrade, and a casual yet competitive nature that will appeal to a wide range of people. Although it has some pay-to-win aspects, the game is still incredibly entertaining and is the perfect game to pick up and play at any time for quick bursts of fun.

Path of War Review
Path of War is a free-to-play, strategy war game developed by Envision Entertainment, the company behind Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances, and published by Nexon, the huge game publisher behind the mobile games, DomiNations and Mabinogi Duel. After the huge success of DomiNations which garnered over 17 million downloads in less than a year, Nexon is back with yet another strategy game in 2016. Path of War is essentially a city/base building strategy game like Clash of Clans with some slight differences, and with a heavier focus on PVE. Despite being developed by Envision Entertainment, the spiritual successor of EA Phenomic, Path of War is, unfortunately, a very repetitive and generic game limited by its large PVE focus. In a mobile marketplace that is already oversaturated with city builders and Clash of Clan clones, Path of War finds itself buried beneath its competition with nothing that really stands out.

Liberating America
Path of War takes place in a futuristic United States where a tyrannical regime has taken over and it is up to the rebels to liberate America. As part of the rebels, players get to build their own base, much like in a city building strategy game, in order to defend against the “evil” Regime. The game begins with an overly long 30-40 minute tutorial before players are finally on their own in a nation scattered with Regime and other players’ bases. Players can build up their bases with a variety of different structures including defenses such as MG nests and cannons, buildings such Steel Factories, Oil Wells, and storage, and “Other” structures which includes walls and various obstacles. Like most strategy games, these buildings and structures can be upgraded and it takes a long time (minutes to hours) waiting for these structures to upgrade. The player’s base can be attacked by not only other players, but by the Regime (AI) so it is important to create defenses and place them strategically around the main Headquarters. If players are attacked, their structures are temporarily damaged until they fully repair themselves. The game has a huge map and unlike other games, players can actually move their bases anywhere on the map at any time but consumes resources. This “Travel” feature is necessary because players can only attack enemy bases close to them.

Operation Base Takeover
The combat in Path of War is similar to Clash of Clans but with a unique vertical lane system. Players can initiate combat by attacking Regime or player bases around their base in order to obtain resources. Before battle, players can scout the enemy base to observe the defenses and develop a strategy. Then players can deploy their units along a vertical grid by tapping on the ground to summon the selected units. Different units have different advantages so it is important for players to summon the right units in order to break through the enemy’s defenses. Units will move upward toward the enemy’s Headquarters, and can attack enemies in their lane as well as enemies in adjacent lanes. Players will successfully defeat a base if they destroy the enemy’s Headquarters, which is located at the far end of the base, and obtain resources to upgrade their buildings/defenses as well as resources to attack more bases. Each battle takes at max 3 minutes and there is a button to speed it up. The combat is fairly strategic but does get quite repetitive since there isn’t much to do other than to attack base after base until the player runs out of Fuel (resource used to attack).

Troops and Structures
There are various units and structures to unlock in Path of War. Units are deployed in battle, and different units have various advantages in different situations. Units are divided up into infantry, vehicle, and planes, and each unit is specialized against either infantry, structures, or vehicles. New units are unlocked after players defeat Veteran Bases every couple of levels, which are kind of like AI Boss battles, and each unit has different Command Point costs to deploy in battle. There are also rockets that players can launch in battle if they fill up the purple rocket bar via destroy purple buildings. In addition to units, there are structures to unlock which include Civil (resource generating buildings), Military (stationary infantry and cannon/guns), and Other (other defenses such as walls, barbed wire, mud, and traps). Structures can be upgraded which require resources and time, and upgrading the Headquarters unlocks new structures and increases the max level they can be upgraded. Overall, there is a decent amount of units and structures to unlock, which adds base customization and variety to each battle.

Uninspired Gameplay
Despite having unique features such as the vertical lane-based unit deployment and base travelling around the map, the overall gameplay in Path of War is quite generic and monotonous. Games like Clash of Clans are very successful due to the competiveness, community, and strategy associated with its PVP, and the increased focus in PVE in Path of War feels like a step in the wrong direction. Players will spend most of their time in Path of War attacking AI bases, which are randomly generated, and there isn’t much incentive to attack other players; AI bases usually give about the same or more resources than other players so the game almost feels single-player. Even with the various units and structures in the game, attacking bases feel very repetitive, and most of them don’t offer much challenge other than the Veteran Bases. The game doesn’t offer anything that really stands out, and combined with the lack of social aspects, especially for a strategy war game, the overall gameplay is quite disappointing with the only reason to play being to unlock new units and structures.

Cash Shop/In-App Purchases (IAP)
Path of War doesn’t have much in-app purchases but what it does have gives convenient advantages in game progression. The main use of Diamonds (premium currency) is to automatically finish building/upgrading structures, which would normally take minutes to hours. This is not an uncommon feature in city building games, and spending Diamonds allows players to quickly build up their bases. It is not necessarily pay-to-win since all players can eventually build up their bases; they just have to wait much longer if they don’t spend money. Players can also use Diamonds to purchase Construction Cranes which allow for more building and upgrading at one time, and can use Gems to recover spoiled resources, which decline over time. That is pretty much it in terms of in-app purchases and although there aren’t that many, they give an undeniable advantage in faster base upgrading and game progression.

Final Verdict – Fair
Path of War is a decent but fairly lackluster base building strategy game whose downfall is linked to its focus on PVE rather than PVP. Although the combat is kind of unique and there are many units and structures to unlock, the overall gameplay is very repetitive and generic with limited social aspects or reason to continue playing. While some casual players may enjoy the game, there are much better strategy games to be found in the mobile marketplace which is currently saturated with these types of games.
